Sparton Corporation Invests in New York State with the Acquisition of RTEmd

At Sparton, one key focus of its Manufacturing and Design Services segment is medical and biotechnology. Sparton’s services range from developing cancer diagnostics that further personalized care of patients to producing therapeutic devices that treat chronic diseases. However, the healthcare landscape is an ever-changing one and the industry faces increased challenges to commercialize needed medical technologies. To address the challenges associated with commercializing medical technologies, and to ensure that Sparton continues to deliver quality diagnostics and therapeutic devices, the company has developed an exciting growth plan that includes the intent to double in size over the next five years. In addition to a focus on year-over-year organic growth, Sparton has been focused on acquisitions — completing 15 in the last two years to become a $450 million run rate company.
In January 2015, as part of the growth plan, Sparton made its first investment in New York State (NYS) by acquiring long-time MedTech member, Real-Time Enterprises, Inc. (RTEmd), which is located in family-and business-friendly Pittsford, NY. Sparton recognized the robust medical technology industry within NYS and that the addition of RTEmd, a specialized medical software firm, to its portfolio would enable Sparton to expand the services available to its clients.
Cary Wood, CEO of Sparton Corporation, says of the acquisition, “A key component of our strategic vision is to realize synergistic acquisition opportunities that add value to our core portfolio of products and services. Our acquisition of RTEmd aligns precisely with this vision and presents the opportunity to provide enhanced customer value. RTEmd’s capabilities complement our extensive electrical and mechanical design and manufacturing skills within the medical and biotechnology markets. Additionally, RTEmd brings a highly skilled group of professionals with over 30 years of development and regulatory experience with complex FDA compliant products.”
RTEmd’s past owner Bob Ruppenthal adds, “In NYS, there is a lot to be proud of and a lot to be excited about. The breadth of companies, technologies, and capabilities that we have in this region are truly impressive. And we’ve certainly got an opportunity to accelerate that.” RTEmd will continue to service both current and future customers from its present Pittsford, NY location.
