Market Need Develops New Division; Partnership Among Members
Gorbel, Inc. is a global leader in developing overhead material handling, lifting and safety systems for a range of industries. In 2012, Brian Reh, Gorbel’s CEO, was presented with an interesting idea. A Gorbel employee had watched as her daughter underwent physical rehabilitation following a vehicular accident. She observed her daughter being initially unable to support her weight while learning to walk again, necessitating the need for multiple therapists to surround and protect her from falling. Gorbel’s G-Force® technology is used to safely lift and precisely manage heavy materials, and the employee proposed to Brian that the same technology could protect and assist patients during rehabilitation. That conversation led to market analysis, a business plan, and the launch of Gorbel Medical.

Risk reduction and cost effective delivery of quality care are foundations in healthcare reform. These are also the cornerstone value propositions for Gorbel Medical’s first product, the SafeGait 360° Balance and Mobility Trainer. SafeGait is an overhead, dynamic body-weight support system that assists up to 50% of a patient’s weight and provides fall protection during gait and balance rehabilitation. This may enable patients to begin rehabilitation sooner, eliminate the need for multiple therapists to treat a single patient, and prevent patient and therapist injuries due to falls.
A key differentiator for SafeGait is software that captures patient performance measures during therapy. An intuitive interface allows therapists to create a plan of care, collect data during therapy, and document progress over time.
A key differentiator for SafeGait is software that captures patient performance measures during therapy. After two outside software developers failed to meet the project goals in functionality, time, and budget, fellow MedTech member Applied Sciences Group (ASG) was contracted to deliver the project. ASG worked with Gorbel’s software controls engineers to develop an intuitive user interface that allows therapists to create a plan of care, collect data during therapy, and document progress over time. The teams delivered a product that was on time and on budget and has received high praise from customers, including Monroe Community Hospital, Nazareth College, University of Rochester Medical Center, and Ohio State University, since launching in February 2015.
